    Do you know…

that you can search the print collections through Nereus, the Library Catalog?

This page outlines the printed collections of LIC. At the same time, you can learn about how these collections are classified and how they are allocated to the LIC building.

    Collections

Main Book Collection and audiovisual materials

The Library has a rich collection of printed books that covers the teaching and research needs of the university community. The main collection (Basic Collection, designated as ‘ΒΣ’) is extended in the first and second floor. The collection is subdivided into smaller collections, such as the collection of reference material (encyclopedias, dictionaries, handbooks, monographs, series of monographs etc), large format book collection and the collection of multiple copies, which are lying on special shelves on the first floor.

    Theses

The LIC maintains the doctoral theses and dissertations that have been defended in the University of Patras (as well as some older ones from other Greek Universities). These theses and dissertations – which can be searched through the library catalog “Nereus”, but mainly from the institutional repository Nemertes – are located at the Theses stacks on the ground floor of LIC.

    Donations

The LIC maintains also the book collections donated by eminent fellow citizens. The most important of them, the General Education Library of V.V. Antonopolos is searchable through the LIC catalog Nereus, while the rest of the donations are being cataloged as well.

    European Documentation Centre

The LIC hosts printed collections concerning the European Union and the European Council decisions and jurisprudence, under the operation of European Documentation Centre (EDC).

    Sorting & Classification of Material

In every Library, all items in the collection are categorized according to a classification system, so that librarians and users can easily seek and locate an item. The choice of the classification system depends on the character and the type of library, as well as other particular conditions.

The Library and Information Center has adopted the Dewey Classification System. According to it, knowledge is organised in numbers from 000-999.

To facilitate users, special tables with the ten categories of Dewey Classification System have been placed in central spots around the library. Some practical guidelines for identifying books are given in the next paragraphs, depending on the faculty and the thematic category that might inderest you.
